Non-parametric spherical Jeans mass estimation with B-splines

Spherical Jeans modeling is widely used to estimate mass profiles of systems from star clusters galactic stellar haloes galaxies. It derives the cumulative profile, M(<r), kinematics tracers potential under assumptions spherical symmetry and dynamical equilibrium. We consider application mapping dark matter distribution in outer reaches Milky Way using field halo stars. present a novel non-parametric routine for solving equation by fitting B-splines velocity density While most implementations assume parametric forms these profiles, provide curves with analytical derivatives. Our recovers equilibrium flattened or disc bulge excellently (<~ 10% error at radii). Tests non-equilibrium, Way-like galaxies Latte suite FIRE-2 simulations perform quite well 15% r <~ 100 kpc). also create observationally motivated datasets imposing selection functions errors on phase space coordinates characteristic Gaia DESI Survey. The resulting imprecise incomplete data require us introduce an MCMC-based subroutine obtain deconvolved dispersion tracer population. With observational effects taken into account, accuracy remains level 20% better.
